Understanding Emission Scopes
The GHG Protocol classifies emissions into three scopes to provide a comprehensive picture of an organisation's carbon footprint.
Scope 1 — Direct Emissions
Emissions from sources owned or controlled by the organisation: on-site combustion, company vehicles, process emissions.
Scope 2 — Energy Indirect
Emissions from purchased electricity, heating, cooling and steam consumed by the organisation.
Scope 3 — Value Chain
All other indirect emissions across the value chain: purchased goods, transportation, waste, employee commuting, use of sold products.
